Comment
Irish international McShane spent several years at Manchester United where he made only loan appearances before moves to West Bromwich and Sunderland.  His form at Sunderland during 2007-08 dipped before he suffered a knee injury, so McShane represented a risky loan acquisition for the Tigers.  But his form at the KC was largely impeccable and he scored a famous goal at Anfield before being recalled in somewhat spiteful fashion by Sunderland in January 2009.  Back at the Ladium of Shight, he immediately conceded a penalty on his first game back - good lad!
After a decent 2009 pre-season for new Sunlan boss Steve Bruce, McShane was injured before he could return to the first team and returned to Hull permanently at the end of August to sign a four year contract.  His all-action style caught him out a few times in the Premier League but one always knew that McShane was giving 100%. Alas pure effort alone was not enough to secure a berth in Nigel Pearson's and Nick Barmby's free passing Tigers sides, and after a torrid 90 minutes at Burnley McShane was rapidly redeployed south to Crystal Palace.  His Selhurst Park form was sufficient to encourage Eire manager Geovanni Trappatoni to include McShane in his Euro 2012 squad, the first City player to represent his country at the finals of this tournament.
The 2012-13 season saw McShane and former boss Steve Bruce reunited and the alicebanded Irishman played regularly for Bruce's side, turning in a series of man of the match performances in his typical bucaneering style.  In June 2013 he signed a new contract and entered the Premier League one of only two survivors (alongside Tom Cairney) on City's books who made appearances in their last sojourn to the top flight, re-establishing himself as a valuable Premier League defensive asset despite missing several weeks through injury. During 2014-15 McShane had an early season spat with manager Steve Bruce that saw him removed from the team, but three months later he was back in the starting XI and defending heroically as City suffered their second Premier League relegation.  The wounds of the winter had clearly not healed, McShane was released and signed for Reading.
